Work continues this June on the federal Mormon Island Auxiliary Dam project at Folsom Lake, a major project that is designed to reduce the risk of dam failure due to internal erosion and earthquake-related events. For public safety reasons, the Bureau of Reclamation must close the trail on top of Mormon Island Auxiliary Dam during the last stages of the ongoing construction project. The crest of the dam and the trail will be closed on Monday, June 15 and should reopen in February 2016.

The City of Folsom announced its plans to reduce water use citywide by 32 percent, as well as a comprehensive rebate program for its water customers. The plan is in response to Gov. Jerry Brown’s emergency executive order, which directs a 25 percent reduction statewide in urban water use compared with 2013. The State Water Resources Control Board water conservation regulations released Tuesday requires the City of Folsom to reduce water consumption by 32 percent.

Residents picked up more than 22,000 sand bags at two Folsom locations in preparation for mid-December storms. Public Works officials encourage you to keep the sand bags through the winter rain season and use as needed. Store out of direct sunlight so the sun does not destroy the plastic bags. You may also opt to return the bags to the marked dumpster behind City Hall (next to the sand bag pick-up site).

The City is providing free sandbags and sand at two locations -- the far side of the parking lot behind City Hall and the Senior & Arts Center, 48 Natoma St., and Fire Station 36, 9700 Oak Avenue Parkway (near Baldwin Dam Rd.) Shovels are available for use at both sites. By end of the day Wednesday, residents had picked up more than 22,000 bags filled with 240 tons of sand. Sand and bags are still available!

City Hall, Folsom Public Library, Senior and Arts Center and other City services will be closed on Monday, Feb. 17 in honor of the Presidents' holiday. Police, Fire and Trash/Recycling services will not be impacted by the holiday closure.

City water conservation experts encourage everyone to keep irrigation sprinklers in the "off" mode as recent storms provided all the water Folsom landscapes will need for the next few weeks. While reservoir levels are up a bit as a result of recent rain, they are no where near normal levels, and it is critical that conservation efforts continue.
